She currently serves as the Complex Cases and Complex Trauma Clinical Consultant for the Sydney Children’s Hospital Network—a role created by the Network in recognition of her advanced clinical expertise and leadership in this field.

Within her private practice, Dr Helfer provides specialist supervision and consultation to government and non-government organisations, as well as to individual clinicians seeking to enhance their capacity in trauma-informed practice.

Dr Helfer is the recipient of the Award for Outstanding Contribution to Child Protection, reflecting her deep commitment to improving outcomes for vulnerable children in Out-of-Home Care. She is passionate about supporting the professional development of staff within the Department of Communities and Justice and the Department of Education, providing supervision, consultation, and training.

Her training and consultation work extends to NSW Police, NSW Ambulance, Supreme Court Magistrates, and legal professionals, where she advises on the impact of complex trauma on child development. Her expertise has also been sought by the NSW Government Premier and Cabinet Service Delivery Reform Management Committee to inform policy for young people in Out-of-Home Care.

In addition to her clinical and advisory roles, Dr Helfer is an invited lecturer across multiple Clinical Psychology Masters programs in New South Wales and is an active researcher with a particular interest in empathy development and complex trauma.
